Is an Elliptical Better than aTreadmill?
If you wish to get in shape, there’s no question that elliptical machines or treadmills can give you an amazing aerobic workout. For the longest time, treadmills have been thought of as the premier device to get in shape, however elliptical machines are starting to become more common. As more people become aware of elliptical machines, we should see ellipticals eclipsing treadmills in popularity. The ability of elliptical trainers to prevent and protect joints, muscle and bones is a major advantage. Elliptical trainers are becoming more popular because older people find them beneficial. High intensity workouts can be had with elliptical machines despite their low impact.
For the longest time, treadmills have dominated floorspace in most gyms. My doctor has told me that I should stay off ellipticals because of my chronic knee problems. I really enjoy my workouts being outdoors, however with the high temperatrues and humidity in the south, I have a hard time working out outside without air conditioning. Exercise physiologists and doctors tell us that when you use a tread mill that is not perfectly adjusted, each time your foot strikes the belt it slides forward a small amount. Because of this, knee injuries can occur. If you are over 150 lbs. running on a treadmill can feel uncomfortable. I feel that my knees ache more often when I run on a treadmill. I recently talked to an exercise equipment repair technician who told me that about 80% of all treadmills are not adjusted properly. This is due to the fact that having a treadmill professionally setup can cost hundreds of dollars. I often times find treadmills that have belt slip issues in my local gym.
Since the impact is reduced on your knees, knee issues are less of a problem. They also do not have the belt slip problems that hurt our knees. Ever run on air? Well, if you use an elliptical machine, it can feel like you’re floating. Aerobic workouts can be achieved rather easily by using an elliptical. To recover from injury, physical therapists have used elliptical trainers to get patients back to optimal health. Personally, I have noticed that my knee that typically hurts when I run on a treadmill doesn’t hurt when I run on an elliptical. Many quality elliptical trainers have the ability to change the angle or slope of the elliptical motion. The big benefit of being able to do this is that you can hopefully eliminate any discomfort you may have in your joints.
