Plum trees are fruiting trees, they grow the plum fruit. They are grown on a regular basis in the gardens of UK. Their fruit i.e. plum is generally used to prepare jams. They are also eaten like that also. The fruit is occasionally used to prepare a fruity wine or even dried up and eaten as prunes.

The plum trees starts flowering in early spring time. The tree is covered completely in blossom. Generally the flowers of this tree turn into a fruit, but weather conditions also play an important role in converting these flowers to fruits. In case there is a lot of frost, the plum trees can even loose all its flowers. This will reduce the number of fruits than normal. If there is severe frost you may not even get a single fruit. If there has been very little rainfall the fruit crop will also suffer, on the other hand, if the weather has been too wet the crop will yet again suffer. So the plum trees need appropriate weather conditions to grow a healthy fruit.

There are three types of plums belonging to the Damson, European and Japanese groups. Plums are in fact the most popular homegrown fruit around.

Damson trees

Damsons are basically a variety of plum itself. Damson trees can grow almost on all types of soils except for the pure peat and heavy clay. These trees are said to be very tolerant trees. Without causing any problems they can adapt to altitude, soil type, acidity and alkalinity. Damson trees can be considered as nature friendly trees. These trees grow as far north as Scotland. But they favor the weather conditions of western part of the country. The damson trees like to grow in damp conditions, but the blossom time should be dry for good pollination of flowers. These trees do not like their roots to stand in swampy conditions. Damson trees are self fertile.

Damsons are of various types like the Farleigh Damsons, Shropshire damsons etc. The fruit of the tree is very juicy. These trees are very popular amongst trees being grown in small gardens and kitchen gardens.

Gage trees

Gages and plums can be closely related to one another. It is basically the flavor that brings difference between them. Gage tree
