From production values to content, this book disappointed on most every front. Poor typesetting, layout, and design reinforces amateurish reputation of self-publishing. Even the kerning of the word “publishing” on the cover feels like the work of a novice. Content feels very padded out, with 30 or so pages simply listing self-published titles that were supposedly “good sellers” on Amazon.com. The “heart” of the book–consisting mostly of two page reviews of around 30 “self Publishing firms”– feels fairly anemic, with some details already out of date. The rest of the book (how to title your book to make it “marketable,” etc.) were too brief to be of much good to anybody but the rankest of amateurs. I was hoping for so much more for [...], especially with all of the five-star reviews, which now look a little dubious to me…

Your Healing Diet: A Quick Guide to Reversing Psoriasis and Chronic Diseases with Healing Foods
Grateful to have my book mentioned by Ms. Vander Pol as a top health & fitness seller, I eagerly read her book to glean more tricks of the trade. Now I only wish I’d read her book before embarking upon self publishing. In addition to practical advice on how to measure success and the potential value of self publishing she provides an incredibly useful guide on self publishing firms. This guide allows you quickly target and select a self publishing firm based upon royalties, distribution, sales results and upfront investment. Brava!

This is a pretty good book if you are sure that you want to self-publish, and just want a little more reassurance that you are doing the right thing. The author analyzes the different companies in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way. This book will help put your mind at ease, and help you pick the perfect publisher. You should still do your own research, as this industry changes fast, but this is a great resource.
Enjoy!

Badly Needed
By Charles Jacobs, author of “The Writer Within You,” a Best Book of the Year selection
Stacie Vander Pol’s new book is a welcome tool for authors, particularly those newbies who have written a book, but haven’t the slightest idea of where to go to have it published.
Instead of joining the naysayers who have condemned Publishing on Demand (POD) as a business venture, not a legitimate publishing venue. Stacie recognizes the huge value this technology offers an author by walking him/her through the varied pre-publication activities necessary to place a book on press.
POD also offers a writer whose budget is slim the opportunity to make only one relatively modest out-of-pocket expenditure up front. All expenses beyond that are taken from the income the book generates.
But Stacie goes far beyond her role as spokesperson for a much-maligned industry that long suffered from its earliest days when charlatans saw POD as an opportunity to make a fast buck at the expense of starry-eyed novice authors. She has evaluated 26 of the top POD companies, providing all of the relevant information an author needs to make a wise choice of publisher.
I have long been a proponent of POD as a gracious, welcoming introduction for newcomers who are overwhelmed by the complex maze of book publishing. With the knowledge and experience gained from their first POD book, these authors can move on to the rich world of indie publishers as they carve out their writing careers.
Stacie has done a great service to the industry with this guidebook. I have already incorporated it as one of the resources I recommend in my own books and speeches.

This 156 page book contains condensed abundant information about self publishing. If you have, like myself, little knowledge of this field, it will clear up anything you have questions about and lead you free to explore its recommendations. It somewhat fulfills what it sets out to do because of the author’s knowledge of her subject and her ability to condense it into easy reading concisely constructed.
However, be warned. After doing extensive online research on several self publishing firms that received “Excellent” ratings by this author in many categories, I was most surprised to find that there are many reports of their being scams, and the descriptions of deceptive activities are very enlightening. I have to wonder if Ms. Vander Pol did research as well. If you’re interested in self publishing, be sure to check out the ratings of these firms before you make your decision as to which one is best for you.
Kind of disillusioning is the author’s description of how some writers have “review wars” with each other, meaning if you give me a bad review, watch out! When you publish, I will do likewise. Come on, children, grow up!
This book is a a beginner’s “must have” for those who are considering self-publishing. But, again, take heed. Do your own research and save yourself some heartache.
