Subgenre Of Soul Music


The soul classics underwent a series of transformation resulting in the formation of several subgenre of the old school soul, among which some are listed as follows. One among the first is the Motown soul, that is strongly rhythmic and inspired by gospel music, including hand clapping, violins, bells and a powerful bass line. Combination of R&B’s energy with pulsating Southern United State’s gospel music sound led to the evolution of Deep soul and Southern soul. Shimmering, sultry style of soul music featuring melodic and melancholic horns, organs and beats were produced in 1960’s and 1970’s by Stax Records and Hi Records in Memphis, which later came to be known as Memphis soul. A number of recording labels established in the Chicago City demanded for diversification in the music and thus had Chicago soul, though it generally had a light gospel- influenced sound. R&B soul played by the White was generally called blue-eyed soul. Thogu it is not associated with any distinct style, the term was in use right from 1960’s and passed to 1980’s to describe new generation artists. It also refers to musicians of other genre that are influenced by the soul music. A variety of other sub genre includes Northern Soul, British Soul, Neo Soul and Philadelphia Soul.
